Impressive 19th Century Bohemian Perfume Bottle with Original Tall Stopper (Height 25.5 cm)
Verified and recognized by Mgr. Jana Kunešová, glass curator at the Czech Museum of Decorative Arts, who confirmed its origin and importance within the tradition of Bohemian glassmaking.
According to Mgr. Jana Kunešová, this remarkable perfume bottle dates to around 1850 and represents an authentic and rare example of mid-19th century Bohemian glass art. It most likely originates from Northern Bohemia, possibly from the Neuwelt area, which was well known for producing high-quality luxury decorative glass. With a height of 25.5 cm including the stopper, the size is unusually large for a perfume bottle of the period and is not commonly encountered. It may have been made as a special order, as no identical example is known.
The bottle is made of crystal with white and deep cobalt blue overlay on a clear base, decorated with hand-painted colored flowers and fine gilded details, giving it a refined and luxurious appearance typical of high-quality Bohemian glass of the 19th century. The painted flowers may relate to the fragrance originally contained in the bottle, as in some cases decoration could reflect the character or inspiration of the perfume itself.
The neck and body have a ribbed decorative form, while a distinctive swirling, spiral design appears both on the stopper and on the body of the bottle. This characteristic twisted pattern gives the piece a unique oriental-influenced style, which is not often seen on similar Bohemian bottles of the period.
The bottle is in very good condition for its age. The original tall stopper shows an old, well-preserved and discreet restoration that does not affect the overall appearance or the collectible value of the object. There is also a very small chip at the edge of the stopper on the part that fits inside the bottle, as shown in the photos.
Due to its large size, high quality and elaborate workmanship, it is possible that the bottle was made as a special commission for a person of high social status. No identical example is known, which suggests that this is an exceptionally rare, possibly unique, piece of 19th century Bohemian glass.
Because of its size and luxurious construction, the object may not have been intended only as a common perfume bottle, but also as a decorative piece of high artistic quality.
It is a highly collectible and impressive object that can be considered an almost museum-level example of fine Bohemian glassmaking, confirmed and recognized by the glass curator of the Czech Museum of Decorative Arts.
