The Dynavector DV XX-2 MkII is the model most people arrive at when they want the Dynavector character without going to the flagship. It is a low output moving coil with an Alnico-5 magnet and the company's patented flux damper, a 6mm solid boron cantilever and a PF line contact stylus, in a 7075 aluminium body. This one is brand new and unused, and is listed in our special offers section. What it does Like all low output moving coils, the XX-2 MkII trades output for a light moving system. The coils are small and wound with PCOCC copper, so there is less mass for the groove to move. The flux damper is Dynavector's own patent and is there to keep the magnetic field stable as the armature moves within it. How it sounds and where it fits Against the DRT XV-1s, the XX-2 MkII gives up some of the weight and low frequency authority the eight magnet flagship design produces, and it is the lighter cartridge at 8.9g against 12.6g. What it keeps is the boron cantilever, the same stylus profile and the flux damper principle. For a good mid level or upper mid level turntable it is the sensible choice, and it will not demand an arm and phono stage rebuild in the way the flagship can. What arm and phono stage it needs At 0.28mV this is firmly a moving coil cartridge, so a moving magnet input alone will not give enough gain. You need a moving coil phono stage, or a step up transformer feeding a moving magnet stage, with loading at or above the specified 30 ohms. At 8.9g it is easier to accommodate than the flagship. Compliance is 10 x 10−6 cm/dyne, so as a guide an arm of roughly 12g to 20g effective mass keeps the arm and cartridge resonance in the usual 9Hz to 11Hz range.
