The Dynavector DRT XV-1s is the cartridge that made Dynavector's reputation at the top of the range: a low output moving coil using eight small Alnico magnets, a flux damper and a solid boron cantilever, in a body stabilised with African ebony. This one is brand new and unused, never mounted, and appears in our special offers section. What it does A moving coil cartridge produces its signal at very low level, so the magnetic field around the coils has to be stable and even. Dynavector's approach is unusual. Instead of one large magnet it uses eight small Alnico magnets with a flux equalising component, and a square front aperture with a matching square armature. The flux damper is the patented part, intended to hold the field consistent as the armature moves within it. How it sounds and where it fits Dynavector's top cartridges are known for weight and drive rather than a lit up top end. The XV-1s gives bass authority and a solid, well anchored image, and it does not flatter thin recordings by brightening them. It suits a substantial turntable and a carefully set up arm, and it will expose a phono stage short of gain or high in noise. What arm and phono stage it needs This matters more than anything else on this page. At 0.3mV the XV-1s will not work from a moving magnet input. You need a moving coil phono stage with enough gain for a 0.3mV source, or a moving magnet stage fed through a step up transformer. Dynavector specifies a load of more than 30 ohms, so avoid settings far below that. The cartridge weighs 12.6g and compliance is 10 x 10−6 cm/dyne, which suits a medium to high effective mass arm rather than a light one. As a guide, arms of roughly 10g to 16g effective mass place the arm and cartridge resonance in the usual 9Hz to 11Hz window.
