A distinctive vintage lens from Meyer-Optik Görlitz, the Domiplan 50mm f/2.8 is a classic East German standard prime lens known for its iconic black-and-silver “Zebra” styling. Produced during the 1960s and 1970s, it was originally supplied with various Praktica and other compatible film cameras. Today, it remains an interesting choice for vintage lens collectors and photographers looking to explore the unique rendering of classic optical designs.
Classic Triplet Optical Design & Artistic Bokeh
The Domiplan features a simple three-element Cooke triplet optical design. While originally intended as an affordable standard lens, it has attracted renewed interest among creative photographers for its distinctive out-of-focus rendering.
Under suitable lighting and with the right background, the lens can produce the characteristic “soap bubble bokeh” effect, with bright, defined edges around out-of-focus highlights. This can create an artistic, almost painterly appearance that is particularly appealing for portraits, nature photography and creative close-ups.
Vintage Rendering & Creative Potential
Like many lenses of its era, the Domiplan has a different rendering character from modern, highly corrected optics. Wide open at f/2.8, it can produce softer contrast and noticeable flare when shooting towards strong light sources. These characteristics can be used creatively to achieve atmospheric portraits, dreamy backgrounds and images with an authentic vintage feel.
Versatile Use with Modern Digital Cameras
This example features the M42 screw mount, making it suitable for use with compatible M42 film cameras and many modern digital cameras via an appropriate mount adapter. It was tested using an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II with a suitable adapter, and the sharpness was very good. Example photographs taken with the lens are included in the listing.
With suitable M42 extension tubes, the lens can also be experimented with for close-up and macro-style photography.
Condition & Functionality
The lens is in good overall condition, with some small cosmetic marks on the external body consistent with its age.
Aperture ring: Turns as it should.
Focus ring: Smooth operation.
Aperture mechanism: Clean, oil-free aperture blades with snappy operation.
Optical condition: The optics are clean overall, with some small dust particles inside. Under magnification, visible cleaning marks can be seen on the front element.
The lens has been tested on an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II, producing very good sharpness. Please refer to the example photographs included in the listing to see its actual performance.
A characterful vintage lens with iconic Zebra styling, an interesting optical design and plenty of creative potential for photographers who appreciate classic East German optics.
