A distinctive vintage lens from A. Schacht Ulm, a German optical manufacturer known for producing interesting photographic lenses during the mid-20th century. The S-Travegon 35mm f/2.8 R combines classic German optical engineering with the unmistakable black-and-silver Zebra design, making it an attractive addition to a vintage lens collection and an interesting creative tool for modern digital photography.
Classic German Optical Design
The S-Travegon is a 35mm wide-angle lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8, offering a versatile focal length for street photography, travel, architecture, environmental portraits and everyday photography.
A. Schacht Ulm was based in West Germany and operated during a period when independent German manufacturers developed distinctive optical designs. Its lenses are now appreciated by collectors for their historical character, individual designs and place in the development of post-war photographic optics.
Vintage Rendering & Creative Possibilities
With its classic 35mm focal length, the S-Travegon offers a natural perspective while capturing more of the surroundings than a standard 50mm lens. Its f/2.8 maximum aperture provides flexibility in available light and allows for creative control over depth of field.
Adapted to a modern digital camera, it offers an opportunity to explore the rendering of vintage German optics while enjoying the convenience of digital photography.
M42 Screw Mount & Compatibility
Featuring the M42 screw mount, this vintage lens can be used with compatible M42 film cameras and adapted to many modern digital camera systems using the appropriate mount adapter, including Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds cameras.
It has been tested on an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II using an appropriate adapter, and the resulting photographs are sharp. Example photographs taken with the lens are included in the listing so you can see its actual performance.
Condition & Functionality
The lens is in very good overall cosmetic condition, with only a few very small imperfections on the external body.
Mechanical operation: Working well.
Aperture ring: Operates as it should.
Focus ring: Smooth operation.
Aperture blades: Clean, oil-free and snappy.
Optical condition: No haze or fungus. Under magnification, some small dust particles and minor spots are visible on the outer glass, possibly related to the anti-reflective coating. These marks have not affected the image quality in my testing.
The lens was tested using an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II with an appropriate adapter and produced sharp photographs. Example images are included in the listing.
A distinctive piece of West German photographic history, combining classic Zebra styling, a versatile 35mm focal length, an M42 screw mount and very good tested image performance. An appealing choice for vintage lens collectors and photographers who enjoy experimenting with classic manual-focus optics.
