Every stage, from the AKM AK4191EQ and AK4499EX conversion through the OPA1612 current to voltage stage, the filtering and the R2R volume control to the headphone driver, is fully differential and balanced, and the whole unit runs from an ultra low noise linear power supply. Volume is set by a balanced R2R resistor ladder that also allows left and right balance to be adjusted in 0.1 dB steps. An impedance detection system measures the headphone plugged into the 6.35 mm or 4.4 mm socket and recommends the right gain setting, and a Hearing Compensation function measures your hearing and builds a separate correction curve for each ear. The X9 is as much a preamplifier as a headphone amplifier. Balanced XLR and RCA outputs plus two subwoofer outputs let it run a power amplifier or active loudspeakers, while HDMI ARC, USB, optical, coaxial, analogue, Bluetooth and WiFi cover television, computer and network sources. A 4 inch colour touchscreen shows VU meters or a live spectrum, and the unit can also be controlled from the Luxsin app or a web browser.
