5 This is an original Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Tessar 50mm f/2.8, marked “aus Jena, East Germany (DDR)”. After World War II and the division of Germany, the original Zeiss factory remained in Jena, which became part of East Germany. Due to trademark restrictions with West Germany, many lenses from this period were marked “aus Jena” instead of using the full Carl Zeiss name, even though they were produced in the original Jena factory using Zeiss optical designs and expertise. The Tessar design is one of the most important and successful lens formulas in photographic history, known for its balance of sharpness, contrast, and compact size. Lenses from the Jena DDR period are especially appreciated today for their classic image character, strong micro-contrast, and solid all-metal construction. The lens has an M42 mount, making it very easy to adapt to modern mirrorless cameras such as Sony, Fuji, Canon RF, Nikon Z, Micro Four Thirds, and others using a simple adapter.
