The Ricoh RDC-5300 is a truly fascinating piece of digital photography history, introduced by Ricoh in 1999, at a time when consumer digital photography was still in its infancy. This was an important period when manufacturers were making the transition from traditional film photography to digital, and cameras like the RDC-5300 were designed with a level of build quality, individuality and innovation that makes them especially interesting to vintage digital camera lovers and collectors today.

With its 2.3-megapixel CCD sensor and 3× optical zoom lens, equivalent to approximately 38–114mm on a traditional 35mm film camera, the RDC-5300 was a premium and relatively advanced digital camera for its time. Its original retail price was around $699, making it a serious camera when digital photography was still a new and exciting technology.

One of the most impressive features is its Super Macro mode, allowing the camera to focus down to approximately 4 cm (1.6 inches) from the subject. This was an impressive capability for a compact digital camera of the late 1990s and makes the RDC-5300 particularly versatile for close-up photography.

The camera also features a unique two-way video/audio connection, which could be used with a computer and proprietary software to remotely control the camera, preview the image and trigger the shutter. Another fascinating feature for its era is the built-in interval/time-lapse function, allowing the camera to automatically take photographs at programmable intervals ranging from approximately 30 seconds up to 3 hours.

The design is another reason this camera stands out. Rather than the rounded plastic appearance that became common with later compact digital cameras, Ricoh gave the RDC-5300 a solid, boxy design with a traditional photographic feel, inspired in part by classic 35mm rangefinder cameras. It also features an optical viewfinder that mechanically zooms together with the physical lens, adding to its old-school photographic character.

For collectors, the camera offers several other interesting period-specific features, including black-and-white and sepia image modes, as well as the ability to protect selected photographs with password security directly on the memory card.

The camera operates with 4 × AA batteries. Batteries are not included, but AA batteries are inexpensive and very easy to find.

The camera comes with a 32MB SmartMedia (SM) memory card. Together with the camera's internal memory, this allows you to take approximately 39 photographs at the full camera resolution, while considerably more photographs can be stored when using lower-resolution settings.

Please note: The camera uses SmartMedia (SM) memory cards, an older memory-card format that is no longer commonly supported by modern computers. To transfer your photographs, you will need a USB SmartMedia card reader, as a standard SD card reader will not read SmartMedia cards.
