Minolta Riva 140 – Elegant Slim Design | Powerful 38–140mm Zoom | Focus-Zone Indication
The Minolta Riva 140 is a particularly elegant and stylish compact 35mm film camera, combining a beautifully slim body with a surprisingly powerful zoom lens and an interesting autofocus system that makes it stand out from many other point-and-shoot cameras of its era.
One of the first things you notice is its slim, refined and elegant design. Although the body is made from plastic, Minolta gave it a sophisticated finish that mimics the appearance of aluminium, giving the camera a much more premium and luxurious appearance than you might expect from a compact film camera. Its small and lightweight body makes it very easy to carry, making it an excellent companion for travel, holidays, and everyday photography.
Despite its compact size, the Riva 140 features a powerful 38–140mm zoom lens. This provides a very useful range, starting at a moderately wide angle for everyday photography and extending to a strong telephoto setting for portraits, details, and subjects farther away.
Optical Viewfinder with Electronic Focus-Zone Indication
One of the more interesting features of the Riva 140 is its focusing system.
The camera has a traditional optical viewfinder, meaning that when you look through it, you are seeing the actual scene through an optical viewing system rather than looking at an electronic screen like on a modern digital camera.
However, the Riva 140 adds something quite interesting: electronic focus-zone information is displayed inside the optical viewfinder.
As the camera autofocuses, an indicator allows you to see the focus zone selected by the camera. The camera determines the approximate distance to the subject and indicates the corresponding focusing zone inside the viewfinder.
This gives the photographer a visual indication of what the autofocus system is doing, rather than simply focusing invisibly in the background. In concept, it is somewhat reminiscent of the information modern digital cameras display through their viewfinders, although the Riva 140 itself does not have an electronic viewfinder.
Condition & Original Bag
The camera is in almost new condition, with both the body and optics exceptionally well preserved.
The lens is clean and clear, and the camera has been carefully inspected and tested.
The only thing preventing me from describing it as truly new or mint is a few minor cosmetic imperfections on the bottom/base of the camera. These marks appear consistent with the camera having previously been placed on or used with a tripod.
Apart from these small imperfections on the base, the camera presents beautifully. The main body, finish, controls, lens and optics are all in excellent near-new condition.
The camera also comes with its original Minolta carrying bag, which is a beautiful match for the camera. The bag features the same stylish and elegant design, complementing the Riva 140 perfectly. It is also in excellent condition, making this a particularly attractive and complete original set.
