Antique 1920s Art Deco Silver-Plated Mesh “Gate Top” Flapper Purse

Some vintage pieces have a presence that is difficult to capture in a simple description. This is one of them.

Dating to the 1920s, this petite Art Deco gate-top purse comes from an era of jazz, evening dances, elegant dressing, and a new sense of freedom and glamour. It is easy to imagine it tucked into a woman’s hand as she stepped out for an evening, its silver-plated mesh catching the light as she moved.

The purse has a wonderfully unusual hinged circular lid, decorated with a beautifully embossed sailing galleon surrounded by a richly textured border. The nautical motif gives the piece a distinctive personality and makes it much more than an ordinary mesh purse.

Then there is the mechanism—a small piece of antique engineering in itself. Lift the lid and the accordion-style silver-plated metal gate opens smoothly and generously, revealing the original interior. The delicate metal sections expand and contract beautifully, then fold back together when the purse is closed. The mechanism opens and closes smoothly without catching, and the lid sits perfectly and securely in place when closed.

Inside is perhaps one of the most beautiful details of the purse: the original ivory-white silk lining. The silk has a soft, luminous sheen, catching the light with a subtle glow and creating a wonderful contrast against the silver-plated exterior. For a purse nearly a century old, the condition of the original silk is especially beautiful and adds greatly to its charm.

The original snake-chain handle is still present, as is the unusual spring-gate chatelaine ring. This little ring tells part of the story of how such purses were meant to be worn—clipped onto a belt, watch chain, or other accessory so that the wearer could keep her small essentials close while enjoying an evening of dancing and socializing.

Condition

The purse is in excellent antique condition for its age. The intricate gate mechanism remains fully functional, opening and closing smoothly, and the lid is firm and properly aligned.

The original silk interior is beautifully preserved, with its soft ivory-white color and lustrous sheen still visible. The silver-plated mesh remains wonderfully intact.

As expected from a genuine antique of this age, the exterior shows authentic signs of time and use. There is natural patina, gentle tarnishing, and some loss of the original silver plating, particularly around portions of the lid rim and on the lower mesh sections. These areas reveal the warm rosy tone of the underlying base metal. Rather than looking artificial or heavily restored, the surface has the quiet character that comes from nearly a century of age.

Approximate Size

9.5 cm high × 8 cm wide, including the gate-top mechanism.

What makes this purse particularly special is the combination of its silver-plated mesh, beautiful original silk interior, unusual galleon lid, working mechanical gate, original fittings, and excellent overall condition. It is the sort of small antique that invites you to imagine the person who once carried it, the places it may have travelled, and the evenings for which it was originally made.

For someone who loves vintage not simply for its appearance, but for the sense of history and connection to another time, this is a truly charming piece. It has survived with its original character intact—and after nearly a century, it can still be opened, closed, held, and admired just as it was in the Art Deco era.
