What it does The Theseus is a complete amplifier: source switching, volume, phono stage and power amplification in one unit. Three line level RCA inputs handle a streamer, a CD player or a tuner, a moving magnet phono input takes a turntable directly with valve RIAA equalisation from two 12AX7 valves, and a USB input accepts a computer. Volume runs through a motorised blue Alps potentiometer with an aluminium remote handset, and there is a tape output. The driver stage uses two 12AU7 valves and wiring is hand soldered through hole throughout. How it sounds and where it fits Output power depends entirely on which power valves are fitted. Tsakiridis quotes 2x10W with EL34 and up to 2x30W with KT170, so the fitted set decides what this amplifier can drive. With EL34 in place, treat it as a 10 watt amplifier and choose loudspeakers of 91dB or higher in a small to medium room. With KT170 and 30 watts available, speakers around 88dB become realistic. Either way the amplifier has a single 6 ohm output impedance, so loads that drop below 4 ohms or swing widely with frequency are best avoided. Do I still need a separate phono stage? Not for a moving magnet cartridge. The valve phono input handles that directly.
