It is a universal player in the old sense of the word, reading 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, SACD, DVD-Audio and CD, but it is built to a standard that puts it alongside dedicated high end digital sources rather than alongside other disc players.Two separate ESS ES9038PRO converters do the work: one dedicated to the two channel balanced XLR and RCA outputs, the other to the 7.1 channel RCA outputs, so the stereo path is never sharing a chip with the surround path. Seven OPA1602 operational amplifiers sit in the analogue stage, clocked by an ultra low phase noise 100MHz temperature compensated oscillator, with ELNA, NCC, WIMA and SILMIC II capacitors through the signal path and HDMI TMDS retiming to suppress jitter on the audio port.Power is handled by two supplies, including a 60W low noise toroidal transformer reserved for the analogue stage, and the whole thing sits in a dual layer all aluminium chassis weighing 15.5kg with internal shielding and damping. The result on the two channel XLR output is a signal to noise ratio of 130dB, distortion plus noise below 0.0005% and a response flat from 20Hz to 50kHz within 0.01dB.It is not only a disc player.
