The Minolta AF-Z, also sold as the Minolta Freedom III in North America and Minolta Mac-7 in Japan, is a stylish 1980s autofocus compact camera introduced around 1986. It has the unmistakable angular design of the period, with the red AF marking, built-in flash and sliding front cover that protects the lens when the camera is not in use.
One of the strongest features of the AF-Z is its 35mm f/2.8 prime lens. The relatively bright f/2.8 aperture makes it more interesting than many basic compact cameras of the same era, while the 35mm focal length is excellent for everyday photography, travel, street scenes and family photographs.
The camera offers a very easy point-and-shoot experience with autofocus, automatic exposure, automatic film advance and rewind, DX film-speed reading and built-in flash.
It is powered by 1x CR-P2 6V lithium battery.
Battery is not included.
Condition & Testing
This camera has been fully tested and is working correctly. Mechanically and optically it is in excellent working condition. The autofocus, shutter, film transport system, flash and camera controls have all been checked and operate properly. The lens is also in excellent optical condition.
Please carefully note the following cosmetic imperfections, which are clearly shown in the photographs:
1. There is a crack in the outer plastic body, beginning on the rear grip area and continuing toward the front. This is a problem that can appear on this particular model with age. Despite the crack, the plastic still feels strong and solid, and the grip remains firmly in place.
2. On the side of the camera, underneath the strap protector area, a small section of plastic is missing. I have carefully covered/fillled this area with soft foam, so only a small part remains visible, as shown in the close-up photographs. This is also a cosmetic issue and does not affect the operation of the camera.
Despite these body imperfections, the camera remains solid, fully functional and perfectly usable for photography. The plastics still hold firmly and the imperfections do not interfere with normal use.
A very attractive vintage Minolta for someone looking for a genuine 1980s autofocus film camera with a fast 35mm f/2.8 lens, either to use regularly or to add to a collection.
