The coin commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi, one of the most significant and tragic events of the Greek War of Independence. In April 1826, the residents and defenders of the besieged city, driven to the brink of exhaustion, attempted to break out, knowing the consequences. Despite the tragic outcome, the courage and sacrifice of Messolonghi became a symbol of the Greek people’s aspiration for freedom and independence.
