The Opus 1 is the smallest loudspeaker Avantgarde makes and the least expensive way into a real horn system. It is fully active, so amplification and crossover are built in, and it needs only a balanced signal from a preamplifier, DAC or streamer. A 10 inch die cast bass driver with a three inch voice coil and a concave paper cone runs to 700 Hz, where a one inch compression driver on a horn takes over to 20,000 Hz at 103 dB per watt. The cabinet is 35 cm wide and 110 cm tall on its spikes, which is a genuinely domestic footprint. Amplification is 250 watts into the bass driver and 10 watts in AB mode, of which the first watt is Class A, on the horn. Again the numbers look small until the efficiency is taken into account. The horn is barely working at normal listening levels, which is exactly the point. Avantgarde Acoustic has built spherical horn loudspeakers in Lautertal, Germany since 1991. A horn is not a styling choice here. Loading a driver into a horn raises efficiency so far above a conventional cabinet that the amplifier is barely asked to work, and the diaphragm moves a fraction of the distance, which is where the effortlessness and the absence of strain come from. Connection is a single XLR line input at 10 kohms with a 12 volt trigger, and the standard back tilt of 2.7 degrees is adjustable at the spikes to aim the horn at the listening seat. Four finish combinations are offered, black or white cabinet with a black or white horn. Avantgarde build to order and quote 8 to 12 weeks from receipt of order.
