The San Pedro cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi, formerly Trichocereus pachanoi) is a fast-growing columnar cactus native to the high-altitude Andes Mountains of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Renowned for its tall, pillar-like stems and night-blooming fragrant white flowers, it has a rich history in traditional Andean medicine and ceremonial healing.

History: Used for over 3,000 years by indigenous Andean cultures in traditional healing and spiritual rituals (where it is often called huachuma).

Compound: The plant contains psychoactive alkaloids, most notably the hallucinogen mescaline. While legal to grow as an ornamental plant in many regions, harvesting, processing, or ingesting it for psychoactive use is strictly controlled or illegal in various parts of the world.
