Willem Blaeu – “Cyprus Insula” (Cyprus), Amsterdam, c. 1635–1645

An original copper-engraved map of Cyprus by the celebrated Dutch cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571–1638), published in Amsterdam for his monumental atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Atlas Novus). Widely regarded as one of the finest early maps of Cyprus, it combines detailed geographical information with the rich decorative elements characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age of cartography, including heraldic devices, compass roses, sailing ships, and an allegorical figure representing Venus (Aphrodite), the goddess traditionally associated with Cyprus.

The engraved map measures approximately 378 × 504 mm, matching the recorded dimensions of authentic Blaeu impressions. The framed presentation measures approximately 52 × 62 cm. Physical features supporting authenticity include the original atlas centerfold, extensive printed text on the verso, visible plate impression from copperplate printing, and the appearance of period handmade rag paper. When backlit, the reverse atlas text can be clearly seen through the sheet, a characteristic commonly found in seventeenth-century atlas leaves.

Condition is consistent with a map approaching four centuries of age. Visible issues include age toning, foxing, staining, fold discoloration, and evidence of historic moisture exposure, particularly along the centerfold. The map remains housed in an older double-glazed frame and has not been examined outside the frame. While these condition factors influence market value, they are typical of surviving seventeenth-century atlas maps and do not diminish its historical importance or decorative appeal.
